RE: Can my Outback take 16 " tires and what is the benefit

There is no question that you have more options with 16" rims. Looking through the Michelin truck book and RV tire guide, Michelin doesn't even offer a 15" tire. I faced the same decision last November. I could stay with 15" tires for about $400 or go to 16" for $1500. I don't think I will have this FW for more than another year so I stayed with the 15" rims. BTW it seems the best 15"er is the Maxxis, load range "E". If I had a new FW I would have 16" rims!

RE: A brighter side to rising fuel prices!

I keep asking why people are complaining about the cost of gas/fuel. It’s quite clear that most people here in the US are happy with the price! After all we won’t drill for our own oil! We won’t build new refineries. We won’t build nuclear generating stations. Obviously we like what we are getting.

RE: Travel America Pay at the Pump Limits

I buy diesel at Safeway where I get a 10 cent per gal, discount if I have bought $50.00 worth at the grocery store. They have a $75.00 limit and you can swipe your card a second time if you are not full. How ever you don't get the 10 cent discount on the second transaction. that really sucks!

RE: Why don't slide-out toppers have a drain hole?

Hummm...an awning designed to keep water off of the slide roof that drains that water ONTO the slide roof. I'm AMAZED they haven't thought of that since they had no problem inventing the trash compactor (takes 200 lb. of trash and turns it into 200 lb. of trash) :) For shame! I'm including you lv2rom)!! You guys are really BAD. Next you will be ridiculing the guy that wants to use a 200 ft. 1/2" garden hose to drain his black tank so he doesn't have to drive down to the dump station. Good ideas are hard to come by! LOL

RE: Cost of rotochoks

Unless you're handy and can make your own, as we did, yes they are very well worth the cost. Spreading those axles definitely helps eliminate excessive movement when parked. I did that! Made a set out of big wood clamps from Harbor freight. They looked beautiful but the first (and only) time I used them I thought I have to remove a tire to get them off. I am sitting here watching a coyote walk past my 5er & those rotochocks sure look purrty and they work! Well worth the money.

RE: Leaving hitch on 5th Wheel

Use a hoist to lift out of the truck and then lower it to the ground onto a wooden furniture dolly and then roll it to where ever you want to store it. That is what I do. Should have said I have a hook on the ceiling of the carport and hang the hoist there. :) No strain. :) If I had made an input to this it would have been a duplicate to tvman44's. My hoist is an old deer hoist I bought about 25 years ago. Still does the job as I prefer not to leave my hitch connected.

RE: TV installation

If you don't want to drill holes Camping World (and I am sure other RV parts places)have plastic clips/straps that you apply with sponge tape. We have used the for several years on 19" TV. They don't cost much and can be removed with "Goofoff".

RE: What kind of folding ladder do you have?

I like the 8' one I got at CW. It folds up to about 4"X4" and works great. Not the cheapest but I will be giving it to my Grandchildren for their RV.

Propane Tank Drop Out

Just a heads up to every one. Friends of ours were driving their MH down from N. Cal. to meet us in Las Vegas. When they arrived they had their propane tank in the bed of their S-10 toad. Seems that as they were cruising down the interstate at 65 mph the front of the tank came loose and dropped onto the road. By the time they could stop they had a great white cloud of propane surrounding the MH as the road way had ground a hole in the tank.. They were lucky, no explosion! They got a new tank and had it installed for only $780.00. They contacted Forest River to cover the cost and two weeks later when they got home FRS had a check waiting for them. Word to the wise, if there is any way your tanks could fall out check them to be safe. Yeah, another thing to worry about.

RE: Down Hill Braking

When I hit the interstate I set the cruse control at 60 MPH and let the Duramax and Allison take care of the road. I have tow/haul and over drive on. If I come to a long steep down grade (6% or better) or one with sharp curves I turn off the cruse control and lock out the over drive. This has taken care of any down grades I have come across so far with out an excessive use of the brake pedal. Your stock engine and trany should do fine. Just stay off mountain roads that warn "NO RV's".

RE: Second Amendment on the road

I have stopped carrying hand guns when I travel out of AZ. First off too many weird laws. Second if I have to use one inside the FW, even a .22 would go through several walls. I have thought about this quite a bit and have settled on the following: a 12 ga. shot gun with an 18" barrel and a pistol grip. With a light load it probably won't go through the walls and into someone else's RV. You don't have to aim all that good (in the dark?)and most states have very few restrictions on shot guns. Just my thoughts on the subject.

RE: Forest River - Sierra

We bought our FR Sierra in Mar. 2000 in Cal. Had a few minor problems which FR and their repair dealer here in AZ took care promptly. Have had no problems since 2000. Depending on floor plans we would buy another Sierra when we replace this one.

RE: propane leave it on or off

Same here and we have never had a problem.

RE: lug nuts

Lug nuts should be checked on the basis of mileage not time. When we first bought our FW we were told to torque the nuts to 90 ft/lbs and check them every 200 miles. We did and sure enough they were loose. After about three years of this they stopped loosening up but I still check before every trip and about every 500-600 miles. Yes, the nuts should be loose before you torque them if you want them to be torqued to an exact load. If you just want to be sure they are at least torqued to a set amount no need to loosen them.

RE: What new products have you bought for 2008?

Can't find any thing new I want (with in reason)that I don't have. OH!I did buy a new Garmin Nuvi 200w at Costco for $200. This, to replace the Lowrance I-Way 500 I thru out the window some where between Laughlin and Las Vegas!

RE: Which repacement tire would you buy?

First thing... weigh your FW so you know what weight you really have, don't guess. Then, if the tires are not safe, contact Jaco for a fix. If you do have to replace your tires at your expense, go with the Michelins. Good luck.

RE: RV Toilet paper

We have used Costco paper in our septic tank and FW for years with no problems! If its good enough for septic it is good enough for FW.

RE: GPS

I just (30 minutes ago)ordered a Garmin Nuvi 200W from Costco ($199.99 + tax)it is supposed to have that feature. This thing is small enough you can carry it in your shirt pocket. I don't think any GPS can keep you off ALL the bad roads.

RE: Good Tire Guage?

I bought my tire gage many years ago at PEP Boys. Analog dial type. Checked my new TV and 5er tires on Jan 5, before trip to Las Vegas (600 mi. rnd trip)just checked them and all match my starting PSI (80 for FW & TV rears, 55 for TV fronts). I guess that means the gage is still accurate!

RE: Opinions on Tailgates

We had the factory tail gate on TV from 2000 to 2004. Bought our current TV in 2004 & thought it would be cool to have the vented TG. We still put it down when we hook up, don't want to ding it up. Have found no advantage to V notch, vented TG over original! Save the $$ you will need them. I paid $3.76 for diesel Friday in Kingman AZ.
